Jeff and Dusty met while they were both working on the film A Kiss Before Dying. Dusty was working as a stuntwoman on the film.

Joan Bartlett, who was known as Dusty, and Jeffrey Hunter were married from 1957 until 1967. Jeff adopted her son Steele from a previous marriage, and they had two sons together: Todd (born Henry Herman McKinnies III) and Scott.
